When you record video with the phone in your hand the frame shakes, and when you want to show a product from your shop you are simply one hand short. The Dona catalogue has 38 selfie sticks and tripods: the cheapest is 50,000 UZS, the most expensive 677,000 UZS. The difference comes down to three things: height, load capacity and the type of legs.

Selfie stick, monopod, tripod#

A selfie stick extends and is held in the hand. Most models turn into a small three-legged tripod when folded, which is why the catalogue lists them as “selfie stick and tripod”. For travel, vlogging and quick live streams.

A monopod is one long pole without legs. It is for shooting on the move: for example, the Jmary MT-65 carbon monopod extends to 3 metres and is used for shots from above.

A tripod has three legs, stands on the floor or a table and does not move at all as long as nobody touches it. For interviews, live streams, product shots and long recordings, this is the only right option. There are also small tabletop tripods: the Jmary MT-19 is 31.2 centimetres when extended.

Height and load capacity#

The height is stated in centimetres in the name. For selfie sticks it is around 86-158 centimetres; floor tripods start at 134 centimetres. For a video where you talk at eye level you need more than 140 centimetres; if you use it on a table, 30-40 centimetres is enough.

Load capacity is the second number. For a phone even 1 kilogram is plenty, but if you want to mount a camera or a ring light on the tripod, you need some headroom. For example, the Jmary KP-2205 tripod is rated for 2.4 kilograms.

A light aluminium tripod is easy to carry but shakes in the wind. Most models have a hook on the centre column: hang your bag on it and the tripod gets heavier and steadier.

Remote, head and thread#

The Bluetooth remote is a small button that comes out of the stick’s handle or sits separately. You need it to start recording from a distance: you do not touch the phone, so the frame is not disturbed. The remote runs on a battery and pairs with the phone once.

The head type decides the angle of the shot: a ball head turns quickly in any direction, while a 3D panoramic head keeps the horizon level and lets you pan slowly. Professional models have a quick-release plate for taking the camera off in one move.

The standard 1/4-inch thread is the same on almost every tripod, so you can swap a phone clamp, a camera and a ring light on the same tripod.

What you can see in a live stream#

The most important quality of a tripod is how tightly its locks hold. A photo never shows this, but in a live stream you find out in a second: ask the seller to extend the tripod fully, mount a phone and press down on it gently. If a lock slips or a leg wobbles, the frame will slowly sink during a long recording.

The second question is the width of the phone clamp: will a large phone in a thick case fit. The third is whether the remote is in the box, because “Bluetooth” in the name does not mean a remote is included. Asking about these in a live stream is more reliable than reading the photos and the description.

Frequently asked questions#

Is a selfie stick the same as a tripod?
Many models do both jobs: extended, they are a stick; with the legs open, a small tripod. But a tall floor tripod is a separate product.
How does the remote connect?
You find the remote in the phone’s Bluetooth list and pair it once; after that it presses the camera button. On some models the remote comes out of the handle.
Can I mount a camera on a phone tripod?
If the thread is the same, yes, but check the load capacity: a light tripod will not carry the weight of a camera.
