Car phone holder — magnetic or clamp?
Magnetic vs clamp holders, air vent, dashboard or windscreen: which one will not fall off? A buying guide with real prices from the Dona catalogue.
A car phone holder is a small 20,000 UZS item, but pick the wrong one and the phone drops at the first pothole, or the base softens in the summer sun and comes off the dashboard. The Dona catalogue has more than 16 car holders, from 18,000 to 382,000 UZS. The choice starts with two questions: how the phone is held, and where the holder is mounted.
Magnetic or clamp#
Magnetic. You put the phone on and take it off with one hand, which is the most convenient while driving. There is one condition: a metal plate has to be stuck to the back of the phone, or you need a case with a magnetic ring. iPhone 12 and later models already have a MagSafe magnet inside, so they stick to a magnetic holder without a plate, but a thick case reduces the grip.
Clamp. It holds the phone mechanically from both sides, and no plate is needed. It is more reliable, especially for heavy and large phones. The downside: putting the phone in and taking it out takes two hands, or at least a second longer.
A gravity holder is a separate type: the phone presses the clamp with its own weight and the clamp closes. It works with one hand and needs no plate either.
Where it is mounted#
- On the air vent. The most common solution. The phone sits close to eye level and nothing is stuck to the dashboard. Downside: in winter the heater warms the phone, and in summer the phone blocks the air conditioning.
- On the dashboard (adhesive base). It holds firmly and you can put the phone wherever you like. But when the car heats up in summer the adhesive layer softens, so clean the dashboard with alcohol first.
- On the windscreen (suction cup). It blocks a little of the view, but the phone sits in line with the road and your eyes do not wander far from it.
- On the steering wheel. Only for couriers and taxi drivers. When the wheel turns the phone turns too, so it is not comfortable for long trips.
What to look for in a car phone holder#
Three numbers: phone size, weight limit and rotation. The description will say something like “4.5–7 inch” or “up to 1.4 kg”; compare that with your phone. Phones with large screens do not fit cheap clamps. Rotation (360 degrees) lets you turn the navigator to landscape, which helps in Tashkent traffic.
One more practical point: there are holders with wireless charging, but they cost several times more than a plain holder, and charging stops when the car is switched off. For most people a plain holder and a good cable work out cheaper. In the chargers section you can pick a car adapter and cable separately, and the article on choosing a phone charger explains the wattage numbers.

What to ask in the live stream#
The description does not answer the most important question about a holder: how strong the magnet is and whether the clamp really holds the phone. In a live stream this is easy to test. The seller puts a phone on the holder and shakes it or turns it upside down, and you see whether the phone stays in place. Ask: “Is a metal plate included in the box?”, “Does it hold a phone in a thick case?”, “Is the air vent hook plastic or metal?”. The last one matters, because a cheap plastic hook breaks in the first winter.
