Household cleaning products: sponges, cloths, degreaser and pods
How to choose household cleaning products: sponges, floor cloths, degreaser, all-purpose cleaner and laundry pods. Real prices from the Dona catalogue.
Cleaning products are bought every month, so a poor choice wastes money every month too: the sponge falls apart in two days, the cloth does not soak up water and the all-purpose spray will not shift grease on the hob. A good kit is simple: a sponge for dishes, cloths for floors and dust, a degreaser for the kitchen and a separate cleaner for the bathroom and toilet. Below is what to look for in each, with real prices from the Dona catalogue.
Sponges and cloths: the basics#
A dish sponge usually has two layers: a soft side for everyday dishes and a rough abrasive side for burnt-on food. Do not scrub non-stick or ceramic pans with the rough side, as it scratches the coating. Replace the sponge every 1–2 weeks, because bacteria multiply quickly in a damp sponge.
A floor cloth should be thick and absorb water well. A thin cloth leaves streaks and tears quickly.
A microfibre cloth is the best choice for dust, glass and furniture: its fine fibres trap dust and often clean well with water alone. Do not wash microfibre with fabric softener, or the fibres stop picking up dust.
Cleaning products: which one for what#
A degreaser is for the hob, oven and tiles. A regular all-purpose cleaner struggles with hardened grease, while a degreaser softens it. Spray, wait a few minutes, then wipe.
An all-purpose cleaner is for the bath, sink, toilet and floors. Chlorine-based cleaners bleach and kill germs, but leave marks on coloured fabric.
Laundry pods replace powder and gel: one pod is meant for one wash, with nothing to measure. Put the pod in the drum before you load the laundry.
If you are updating your kitchen, see our guides on choosing a tableware set and choosing a tap.

Safety rules#
Never mix a chlorine-based cleaner with other cleaning products, especially acidic ones: it releases a toxic gas. Wear rubber gloves when using household chemicals so your skin does not dry out and crack. Store laundry pods and cleaners in a closed place out of children’s reach: a brightly coloured pod looks like a sweet to a child.

Why choose cleaning products on a live stream#
A photo does not show how thick a cloth is or how rough a sponge feels. On a live stream, ask the seller to dip the cloth in water to show how much it absorbs, show both sides of the sponge close up and read out the bottle size on camera. Type “is it safe for coloured laundry?” in the chat and you get the answer straight away.
