When autumn evenings turn cold, an electric heater is the first thing most people think of. But two heaters that look alike can do very different jobs: one warms only the person sitting right in front of it, the other slowly warms the whole room. To choose a heater, answer three questions: how big is the room, where will the heater stand, and who will use it and for how long. Below we walk through real models and prices from the Dona catalogue.

Heater types and what each one is for#

A quartz (infrared) heater warms the people and objects in front of it rather than the air. You feel the heat as soon as it is on, so it suits a desk, a kitchen or any spot where you sit for a short time. The downside: step out of its beam and the warmth is gone.

A wall-mounted heater warms the air and gives even heat across the room. It takes no floor space and a child or pet cannot knock it over, which is why people often pick it for bedrooms and children’s rooms. Some models come with a remote, so you can change the temperature without getting out of bed.

A panel radiator is not a stand-alone electric appliance: it connects to the home’s heating system, meaning the boiler. People buy one when a new heating system is being installed in a flat or house, or when an old cast-iron radiator is replaced. You will need a plumber to fit it.

Power: match it to the room#

Heater power is given in watts (W). A rough guide: a room with well-insulated walls and a normal ceiling height needs about 1000 W for every 10 square metres. A 1000 W heater suits a small room or a single workspace; a 2000 W heater suits an average bedroom or living room. A corner room, a room with a large window or one on the windy side needs more.

More power means more electricity. That is why dual-mode heaters are handy: run them on low during the day and switch to full power when it is freezing.

Safety: what to check#

Keep the heater at least a metre away from curtains, blankets and furniture. Plug it straight into a wall socket rather than an extension lead: a 2000 W heater can overheat a cheap extension. Make it a habit to switch it off when you leave home and before you go to sleep. In a home with children, a wall-mounted model lowers the risk.

Before buying, check the product page for tip-over shut-off and overheat protection. If the description does not say, ask the seller. For other home upgrades, see our guide on how to choose a tap.

Why choose a heater on a live stream#

A photo does not show a heater’s real size or how hot it gets. On a live stream, ask the seller to switch the heater on, change the modes and open the box on camera to show whether wall brackets are included. Type “how big a room will it heat?” or “does it switch off if it falls over?” in the chat and you get the answer on the spot. More useful questions are in our article on what to ask a seller on a live stream.

Frequently asked questions#

Does a quartz heater use a lot of electricity?
It depends on power: a 1000 W heater running at full power for an hour uses about 1 kWh. Quartz heaters warm up fast, so a short run is usually enough.
Which is best for a bedroom?
A wall-mounted heater: it warms the room evenly, takes no floor space and cannot be knocked over by accident.
Can a panel radiator be plugged into a socket?
No. A panel radiator connects to the heating system and runs on hot water. If you need something that plugs in, choose a quartz or wall-mounted model.
