Is a magnetic phone mount bad for your phone? Where the plate goes

How a magnetic car mount affects your phone's memory, camera, wireless charging and NFC payments, and where to stick the metal plate on the phone or case.

A magnetic mount lets you put the phone on and take it off with one hand, but almost everyone first asks: is a magnetic phone mount bad for my phone? Short answer: memory and screen are safe, but a badly placed plate can switch off camera stabilisation, wireless charging and NFC payments. Here is where the plate should go.

Is a magnetic phone mount bad for your phone?#

Flash memory, unlike old hard drives, is not written magnetically, so a mount’s magnet will not erase your data. The screen, battery, mobile signal, GPS and Bluetooth are not damaged by it either: your position on the map stays correct, only the direction arrow can drift (more below).

What a magnet does affect#

It does affect four things:

  • Camera stabilisation. Apple’s archived iPhone support page says the camera’s lens-position sensors respond to magnetic fields. A strong magnet next to the rear camera (say, a plate stuck near it while the phone sits on the mount) temporarily throws off the stabilisation and autofocus sensors, so photos can be less sharp. Apple advises keeping magnets and magnetic metal away from the rear camera (Apple Support). On other phones, too, keep the plate away from the camera.
  • Wireless charging. A plate covering the charging coil in the middle of the back stops wireless charging, or the plate heats up.
  • NFC payments. Metal blocks or weakens NFC. If the antenna sits under the plate, tap-to-pay may fail.
  • Compass. Next to a magnet the compass is off, so the direction arrow on a map can drift. GPS sets your location, so the dot on the map stays right; only the way you are facing gets confused. Since the plate stays on the phone, this can continue off the mount: if the arrow is wrong while walking, on Android recalibrate with a figure eight when the map app prompts.

One more risk is to cards in a wallet case: a magnetic-stripe bank card or access badge caught between the phone and the magnet can be damaged, so keep cards away from it.

Where to stick the plate#

The plate goes on the back of the phone or inside the case:

  1. Away from the camera. Keep the plate clear of the camera block.
  2. Off the coil, but close to the centre. The wireless charging coil, and on many phones the NFC antenna, sit in the middle of the back. Put the plate just below the coil, but not out at the edge: a phone held far from its centre of gravity swings over a pothole and can fall off. Antenna positions vary, so tape the plate on first, test wireless charging and tap-to-pay, then stick it.
  3. Under the case. Between the phone and the case the plate is hidden and does not scratch. The case has to be thin, or the magnet will hold the phone weakly.

Wipe the spot with alcohol first, and give the adhesive time to set before using the mount. iPhones with MagSafe (iPhone 12 and most later models, but not the SE 3 or 16e) have magnets built in, so they stick to a magnetic mount without a plate, though a regular or thick case weakens the hold: use a MagSafe case.

What to check in a live stream#

The plate and the magnet’s pull both show in a stream. Ask for a close-up of the plate: how thin, round or square. Have them mount and remove a plated phone one-handed. Also ask: “How big is the plate: will it fit below the coil without covering it?”, “Will the plate fit under a case?”, “Does a MagSafe iPhone stick without a plate?”.

Mount types and placement in the car are covered in car phone holder. If you need charge on the road, read about the car charger.

Frequently asked questions#

Does a magnetic mount damage the battery?
No. A permanent magnet does not affect the battery. Do not leave the phone on the mount while the car is parked in the sun: heat harms the battery far more than a magnet.
Wireless charging stopped working because of the plate. What now?
Tape the plate in another spot and find one where both charging and tap-to-pay work, not out at the edge.
Can a magnet break the camera for good?
Apple describes interference with, or temporary loss of, the sensors: OIS and closed-loop autofocus stop working, but the camera keeps shooting with other stabilisation. Apple also advises keeping magnetic metal away from the camera, so stick the plate away from it from the start.
