How to choose a chandelier: crystal, LED with fan, and size

A chandelier is the first thing people notice in a room. Too big, and a low ceiling feels even lower; too small, and the corners of a large living room stay dark. Before you look at styles, work out four things: the size of the room, the ceiling height, which bulbs it needs and how it will be mounted. Below we explain how to choose a chandelier using real models and prices from the Dona catalogue.

Chandelier types: crystal, LED and fan#

Crystal chandeliers suit living rooms and halls. The crystal pendants break up the light and make the room sparkle. Multi-tier models are large and heavy, so they need a spacious room and a high ceiling.

LED chandeliers are usually lighter and more modern in shape: rings, acrylic shades or coloured crystal shades. They work well in bedrooms, children’s rooms and kitchens.

LED fan chandeliers give light and move the air, which helps in a hot room in summer. The models in the catalogue come with a remote, so you can change the light mode and fan speed without getting up.

Size: match it to the room and ceiling#

A simple rule: add the room’s length and width in metres and multiply by 10. The result is a rough chandelier diameter in centimetres. A 4 x 5 m room needs about 90 cm, a 3 x 3 m bedroom about 60 cm. That is why a 50 cm chandelier fits a bedroom or small hall, while a 75 cm one is meant for a larger living room.

Height matters too. Leave at least 2 metres between the bottom of the chandelier and the floor, or tall people will hit it. With a 2.5–2.7 m ceiling, choose a flush model or one with a short chain rather than a long pendant. Above a dining table it can hang lower, because nobody walks there.

Bulbs and mounting#

Check the product page to see whether bulbs are included and which socket the chandelier uses (for example E14 or E27). Built-in LED models have no replaceable bulbs, so ask about the light colour (warm, neutral or cool) in advance. Warm light suits a bedroom; neutral light suits a kitchen or desk.

Leave the installation to an electrician. A heavy crystal chandelier needs a solid ceiling hook or mounting bar, and a plasterboard ceiling needs extra fixings. Why choose a chandelier on a live stream#

In photos every chandelier looks good, but you cannot see its real size, how the crystal sparkles or the colour of the light. On a live stream, ask the seller to switch it on, change the modes and, on a fan model, change the speed with the remote.
