A weekly barber visit costs time and money, so many people learn to tidy their beard and hair at home. The catalogue, though, lists hundreds of items called “trimmer”, “clipper” or “shaver”, and it is hard to see how they differ. To choose a trimmer, answer three questions: what you will cut (beard, hair, nose or facial hair), where you will use it and how often. Below we walk through real models and prices from the Dona catalogue.

Trimmer or hair clipper: what is the difference#

A hair clipper has a wide blade and is made for cutting the hair on your head to an even length. Its attachment combs are usually longer.

A beard trimmer is narrower. It is good for shaping the beard line, tidying a moustache and keeping short stubble even. Many budget models are sold “for hair and beard”: one body and several combs handle both jobs.

A nose and ear trimmer has a small round head. The blade sits inside, so it does not touch or cut the skin.

A women’s face trimmer is for shaping eyebrows and removing fine facial hair. It is small, often pen-shaped, and fits in a make-up bag.

Cordless or corded: battery and charging#

Most trimmers on sale today are cordless and run on a rechargeable battery. You can move freely in front of the mirror without a cable in the way. The downside: if the battery runs out, the trim stops halfway. Check the product page for how long one charge lasts and how long charging takes. If the description does not say, ask the seller.

Look at the charging method too. A trimmer with a USB cable charges from a phone adapter, so you do not need a separate charger when travelling. A charge light or digital display tells you in advance when the battery is getting low.

Attachments: how many you need#

An attachment comb sets the length that is left after cutting. Two or three are enough for a beard. If you also want to cut your hair at home, choose a set with a wider range of lengths. Before buying, count the combs in the photo and check that each one is marked in millimetres.

Cleaning and care#

To make a trimmer last, brush the hair off the blade after every use. Many kits include a small brush and oil: a drop or two on the blade keeps it running smoothly. Whether the trimmer can be rinsed with water is stated on the product page; if it is not, keep it away from the tap. For hygiene, it is better not to share one trimmer across the family.

Why choose a trimmer on a live stream#

A photo does not show how loud a trimmer is, how it sits in the hand or how firmly the combs click on. On a live stream, ask the seller to switch it on, open the box and show every comb, the brush and the cable on camera. Type “how long does one charge last?” or “can I rinse it?” in the chat and get the answer right away. More useful questions are in questions to ask a seller on a live stream.

Frequently asked questions#

Is one trimmer enough for hair and beard?
Usually yes. A “hair and beard” model with combs of different lengths does both. For nose and ears, a separate small trimmer is more convenient.
Can a women’s face trimmer be used on eyebrows?
Yes, that is what these models are made for: eyebrow shaping and fine facial hair. If your skin is sensitive, try it on a small area first.
How often should I clean the blade?
After every use. Brush away the hair and oil the blade from time to time so it stays sharp longer.
