How to choose a women's bag: size, material, strap and colour
How to choose a women's shoulder or crossbody bag: size, eco-leather or textile, strap, compartments, colour and care. With real prices from the Dona catalogue.
A bag is in your hand or on your shoulder every day, so choosing one only by its looks often turns out to be a mistake. A month later the strap digs into your shoulder, your phone and keys get mixed up, and the colour does not match anything you wear. Before you buy, answer three questions: what will you carry in it, how will you wear it (on the shoulder or across the body) and what clothes will you wear it with. Below we explain with real bags and prices from the Dona catalogue.
Size: what you carry#
A small bag or crossbody holds a phone, a wallet, keys and a lipstick. Your hands stay free, which is handy at the bazaar, on a trip or at a celebration. The downside: a document folder, a water bottle or an umbrella will not fit.
A medium shoulder bag is the most popular size for work and study. It fits a make-up bag, a small bottle of water and a wallet. Before buying, compare the sizes on the product page (width, height, depth) with the things you carry.
A large bag (shopper) is for people who carry books, a tablet or children’s things. A large bag can be heavy even when empty, so ask about its weight.
Material: eco-leather, genuine leather or textile#
Eco-leather (faux leather) is cheaper, lighter and handles moisture well. You can wipe it with a damp cloth. Cheap eco-leather can crack at the corners over time, so look closely at the seams and corners.
Genuine leather is heavier and more expensive, but with proper care it lasts a long time. Even if the product name says “leather”, ask the seller whether it is genuine leather or eco-leather.
A textile bag is light and often washable, which makes it comfortable in summer. But it keeps its shape less well, and stains show more.
Suede looks beautiful, but it is sensitive to rain and dust, so it is better not to make it your only everyday bag.

Strap, compartments and colour#
Strap. A wide strap puts less pressure on the shoulder, especially when the bag is heavy. For a crossbody, choose an adjustable strap: it should sit comfortably over a winter coat as well as a summer dress. A chain strap looks nice but hurts the shoulder under a heavy load. Check how the strap is attached to the bag (sewn on or with a clasp).
Compartments. Look for at least one inside pocket and a main compartment with a zip. Some bags come with a separate small purse, which is handy for cards and coins.
Colour. Black, brown and beige go with almost any outfit, so they are the safest choice for a first bag. A burgundy or pink bag adds an accent to an outfit, but works better as a second bag.
Care. Wipe eco-leather with a damp cloth and treat genuine leather with a special cream from time to time. Store the bag stuffed with paper when empty so that it keeps its shape.
Be careful with very cheap bags that carry a famous brand logo: they are often copies. We wrote more about this in fake products and brands. If you are choosing a bag as a gift, our tips on choosing a gift without leaving home will also help.

Why choosing a bag on a live stream helps#
A photo does not show a bag’s real size and material well. On a live stream, ask the seller to open the bag and show the inside compartments, to put a phone or wallet into it and to wear the strap on the shoulder. If you write “is it eco-leather or genuine leather?” or “is the strap adjustable?” in the chat, you get the answer right there. More useful questions are in our article on questions to ask a seller on a live stream.
