How to choose winter socks: wool, cotton and warm socks

In winter your feet are the first to get cold, especially if the floor at home is cold or you walk outside a lot. Choosing socks looks easy, but with the wrong fabric or size your feet still freeze or sweat. In this guide we explain how to choose winter socks by fabric, by who will wear them and by size, with real prices from the Dona catalogue.

Fabric: wool, cotton and fluffy socks#

Wool socks are the warmest choice for winter. Wool holds heat well, and even if your feet sweat a little, you do not feel cold. They suit people who walk a lot, sleep in a cool room or wear winter boots. Socks with a lot of wool can feel itchy, so if your skin is sensitive, ask for a model that also contains cotton.

Cotton socks let air through and do not irritate the skin. They are comfortable for wearing all day at home, at school or in a warm building. But in hard frost cotton socks alone are not enough: put wool socks over them or choose a thicker model.

Fluffy, soft home socks are mainly for the house. They keep your feet warm on a cold floor, and you can sleep in them. They do not work for the street or for tight shoes, because they are too thick.

Men, women and kids: getting the size right#

Sock sizes are written as shoe sizes, for example 35-40 or 41-45. Socks that are too small press on the heel and tear faster; socks that are too big twist inside the shoe. Women’s socks are usually 35-40, men’s are larger. If the size is not in the description, ask the seller.

Is a multi-pair set worth it#

Socks wear out quickly, and one sock from a pair often goes missing. That is why a set of 5 or 10 pairs is practical: you have clean socks every day, and if one is lost, the rest are still useful. In a family with children a set is especially handy, because kids’ socks get dirty fast. When buying a set, check in the description how many pairs it has and whether they are all the same size.

Care: making socks last longer#

Wash wool socks in warm water with a gentle detergent and do not wring them hard, or they will shrink. Dry them flat, not on a radiator. Cotton socks can go in a normal wash, but wash white and coloured ones separately. Turning fluffy home socks inside out before washing helps keep them soft.
