How to sell in a live stream: a guide for new sellers

Getting ready for your first stream, the order to show products in and answering chat questions: a practical guide to turning a stream into sales.

Your shop is open and your products are listed. Now it is time to go live. This is where many sellers stall: “what do I say, where do I stand, what if nobody comes?” Below is a practical way to run your first stream.

What to prepare before the stream#

Three things: products, space and a plan.

Products. Gather everything you plan to show and keep it within reach. Unboxed, wiped clean and checked that it works. Searching for an item mid-stream is the mistake that wastes the most time.

Space. Keep the background simple: a plain wall or a tidy shelf is enough. Light should fall on your face and the product, not come from behind you, otherwise you turn into a dark silhouette.

Plan. Write down on paper which product you will show and in what order. It removes the “what now?” pauses.

During the stream: show, don’t describe#

This is the whole point of live selling: the buyer sees the item for real.

So pick it up. Turn it around. Open it. Put the clothing on or show it on a hanger. Switch the device on. Compare its size with something familiar: a phone, a hand, a glass.

For each product say three things: what it is, who it suits and what it costs. A long description is not needed.

Chat questions are buyers#

Someone typing in the chat is already interested. Not answering them means letting the sale slip away.

Questions tend to repeat: is this size available, does it come in another colour, what about the warranty, how much is delivery. Find out the most common ones in advance and prepare short answers.

Answer people by name. “Aziza, yes, size 42 is in stock” is a small thing, but it turns the stream into a conversation.

Don’t expect a big audience right away#

Your first streams will have few viewers. Sometimes none at all. That is not failure, it is the start.

A seller who goes live regularly builds an audience over time: people know when you are on and wait for it. Once a week but always at the same time is far more useful than once a month at random.

What to do after the stream#

The work does not end when the stream does, and this is exactly where many sellers stop.

First, go through the questions left unanswered. Not reaching every question live is normal, but you can still reply afterwards, and that often turns into a sale.

Second, note which products drew interest. After two or three streams it becomes clear which category suits your audience.

Third, announce the time of your next stream. A stream people are expecting draws far more viewers than a random one.

The three most common mistakes#

Explaining a product for too long. One or two minutes per product is enough. A long description drives viewers away.

Not saying the price. Say the price before anyone asks. If “how much?” keeps appearing in the chat, you are already late.

Not bringing the camera close to the product. Small details are invisible on a phone screen. Showing things up close is the main advantage of live selling.

Frequently asked questions#

What equipment do I need for a stream?
A phone camera is enough. Extra lighting and a tripod noticeably raise the quality, but you do not need them to start.
How long should a stream last?
There is no fixed rule. Until you have shown your products and answered the questions. Announcing the planned length in advance helps viewers.
What is not allowed on a stream?
Showing goods from prohibited categories, speaking on behalf of another brand and giving false information are not allowed. The full rules are in a separate article.
